"Stupid girl," she said near the corner of his mouth, sounding incredulous, "what could you possibly be thinking?" She kissed his cheek, and he let his head tip forward into her hands. What if he opened his eyes and she saw what she was doing? So that only someone who was holding his cheek and his neck would notice. "I" - he heard her whisper, closer than he expected, and shaky and strange - "think I might be a very stupid girl." He closed his eyes and felt her fingertips touching his cheek, then his forehead, then his eyelids. It seemed like the right thing to do, no matter what happened next.

Clearly, I am so in love with my characters I expect their flaws to be forgivable, their mistakes to be understood, their lapses in judgment to be read within a context of grace and mercy. The idea was so outside the realm of possibility in my head I had to look hard at my character and ask, really? This can happen?Ĭlearly, I was naïve. While I may not have been reduced to rubble it certainly took me by surprise. Thankfully in a year of fairly heart-warming reviews I’ve only had a couple who took the time to express their loathing (may others forever lack such forthrightness). … I’m sorry … you what? You hate Evie? How is that even physically possible?. Imagine my shock the first time I received a review in which a reader despised my protagonist. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did.Īlso keep reading until the end of the post for my review of Stray! (spoiler alert: I loved it!) I am seven kinds of excited to share with you a guest post by Rachael (complete with gifs!) talking about an authors intentions versus the reader’s expectations. There’s action and adventure with a splash of romance for good measure. A mixture of altered DNA, genetically enhanced super warriors in a modern real world setting. The first book Spark was released mid-2014 and has generated much attention in the YA book world. IF you have been reading my blog then you are probably aware just how big a fan I am of Rachael and her Spark series. Welcome to my stop on the Stray by Rachael Craw blog tour organized by Walker Books Australia. Now 60-years-old and no longer content with being a giant in only the music world, Byrne has now written nine books. Perhaps more accurate, however, is that his presence and that of his impressive discography in contemporary music is seminal: a search of The Quietus archives alone returns 187 results - a slew of articles, reviews and interviews that either relate to Byrne directly or mention him by name in some (often reverential) way. Vincent - it's safe to say that Scottish-born David Byrne's impact on and contribution to the music industry since the 1970s has been, at the very least, significant. Whether it's with his most lauded project, the genre-defining American New Wave band Talking Heads, working solo, or one of his many collaborations - most recently the album Love This Giant with St. Nathan sure as heck hadn’t caught any of her blatant hints. If she backed out now, she’d never get things moving between them. The thought settled like lead in her stomach. Things would go on just like they’d always been, with her working at the gallery and Nathan being completely unaware she was interested in him. She would have preferred to go without since it was too warm out for coats, even this late at night, but it wasn’t like she could waltz upstairs wearing only lingerie, could she?Įlle gripped the banister until her knuckles went white. Was she really going to do this? It wasn’t too late to turn back, to pretend she’d never had this insane idea in the first place. Were the walls narrower than before? She adjusted her coat, trying to get some air circulating. Elle knew better-there were only thirteen steps leading to the loft above the gallery, the same as always. The staircase before her seemed to stretch up forever. As soon as she found the courage to take the first step, that is. Hastings records it was no better during World War Two. Why? Because coalition air commanders did not know what constituted the sources and strength of Saddam’s (Hussein) will.” In Desert Storm, coalition air forces attempted to destroy the will of Iraq by bombing leadership targets in Baghdad, but these attacks failed miserably to degrade Iraq`s determination to resist. Bombing cities into dust sometimes works, as does targeting his military capabilities, but both are costly and have many drawbacks so the theorists can debate in their ivory towers until they run out of words. “Attacking an enemy’s will can pay big dividends, but it is hard to know exactly how to do it. The extremists on both sides hold that if you do one, then you don`t need to do the other. “There is a further debate among airpower intelligentsia about whether the attack should be aimed at destroying an enemy’s means (his military forces and the various facilities that allow him to make war) or his will (his determination to resist). The reality does not so much lie in between as it varies with the demands of the situation,” Clancy writes. The doctrinaire advocates of land power conceive of air only as flexible longer-range artillery, really useful only against those same enemy forces in the field. “The doctrinaire advocates of airpower believe, as an article of faith that destroying the “controlling centres” of an enemy nation will render the enemy impotent and helpless, no matter how powerful his forces in the field. If you have not read it, I heartily recommend it – not for its precise historical accuracy, but because it gives such a perfect feel for how soldiers lived, fought and died in those hideous battles against the Japanese.įirst of all, BUGLES AND A TIGER is the story of Masters’s early life, his training at Sandhurst, and his departure to the Indian army, and his career as a soldier on the Afghanistan frontier. In my opinion, it was one of the best books explaining the reality of life for an infantryman in, as he described it, one of the last great Edwardian armies. I was utterly gripped by that book when I first picked it up, and was unable to put it down until I had finished it. Fraser was the brilliantly inventive creator of the FLASHMAN series, and wrote his own war memoir as a way of honouring the men with whom he fought in the Burma campaign. It is vanishingly rare for me to find books that really compare with the superb war memoirs of George MacDonald Fraser, QUARTERED SAFE OUT HERE. I am indebted today to “English Sailor”, who watched my YouTube video about John Masters (it’s here – – if you want to see it), and suggested these two books. I should have liked to understand, what really goes through his mind. Yes, he is extreme, but he feels authentic and his longing for a period, when everything was British (historians will dispute if such a time ever existed) does not appear far-fetched at a time, where Britain and other parts of the world become increasingly more closed to foreign people and foreign goods. The book does not offer any explanations for the father’s views. The portrait of her father is superbly done as well. I just wanted to reach out to her, save her, do something. Silvie’s story is told in an understated, matter-of-fact language, which nevertheless hurts deeply. They have the life, Silvie ought to have, but she is too afraid to even aspire to such a life. Placing her side by side with the students serves as a powerful contrast. Via the dialogue and a few flashbacks, the author draws a thorough picture of Silvie’s life with her restrictive and violent father. The novella takes place over a short period. But Madeline hikes up her nightgown and shows it off. Something that little girls are told by society to hide because it makes us less than perfect physically. She wasn’t afraid of anything and what always struck me was how proud she was of her scar. Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans was a childhood favorite and I remember being a little girl and thinking I want to be just like Madeline because she was so brave. Instead of rain or snow they get hot dogs and a drizzle of soda, or peas and carrots! Things started going wrong in Chewandswallow though and the weather went nuts!
